The Great Mosque of Córdoba: La Mezquita
La Mezquita, otherwise known the great mosque of Córdoba, contains elements of Moorish design similar to those of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. La Mezquita is known the great mosque of Córdoba because it is the largest mosque in the world at 250,000 sq. ft. This great mosque of Córdoba was build by three different muslim leaders, Abd al- Rahman II in 833, Hakam II, and the vizier al-Mansur. (“The Great Mosque of Córdoba). The following are architectural elements in La Mezquita (“Cordoba Mezquita…”) and (“The Great Mosque of Córdoba):
- Various worldly architectural elements including: Spanish vaults, renaissance domes, and baroque altar vaults.
- Moorish ceiling geometrical ornamentation
- Horse shoe shaped arches above pillars
- Alternating brick and stone in arches, creating the white and red stripes on arches
- 850 granite jasper marble pillars
- Bell tower
- Patio de los Naranjo
