The Dome of the Rock and The Süleymaniye Mosque
The Dome of the Rock is an iconic architectural staple located in Jerusalem. 691 C.E. Although it is not a Mosque "per say" it would be considered a Muslim Shrine, but it still contains with it the same Islamic characteristics. For example the blue in Islamic Art symbolizes the sky, and gold representing God. The dome shape signifies the movement traveling upward towards heaven. The dome was also built to enclose and protect the Sacred Rock.
The Süleymaniye Mosque, which is located in Istanbul, Turkey and was constructed 1550-1558. Lavish in intricate detail this structure is another iconic image of Islamic creativity put into physical form. What really differentiates this structure form the Dome of the Rock is the use of minarets.
